Somebody's Genius

I walked for seventeen hours

with a pack and a panting dog

till I found a saltbush plain

then a coloured patch

where feet pressed the sodden earth

a line of rocks

a spring in the desert

with yellow butterflies

buzzing finches and drinking water

behind me, a hill of coloured rocks

thousands of distorting footsteps

blown by a lifting wind

sleeping here

next to black & white fur

saturated bodies

after feasting in a liquid gift

then a dream of Spinifex

and horizon
